Paris, May 2006 – France's debts have accumulated to nearly 2,000 billion euros or about 33,000 euros per citizen; no wonder that voters are upset. The French Minister of Finance, Jean-François Copé, has replied with an online game called "Cyberbudget", where citizens can try to rescue La Grande Nation's finances themselves.
Each French Internet user can become budget minister for an hour, learning how the budget functions, and how hard it is to lower taxes and reduce deficits. "By temporarily putting French people in the skin of the budget minister, I hope to increase their understanding of the technical and political challenges facing the government in putting together a budget every year," Mr Copé told FT.com.
According to Paraschool, the Paris-based e-learning company awarded the 100,000 euro contract to develop the game, players will be informed of how their budgetary choices were affecting public opinion. Within the game, which is to go online in May, users will be able to manage 300 billion euros in play money.
Some 10,000 players will be able to play at any one time. There will be several modules in the game to make it realistic, including a presentation of the budget to parliament for approval. |
