Despite Industry Perception

70:20:10 Remains a Change Agent in the L&D Industry

London (UK), February 2019 - Recent research undertaken by GoodPractice has shown that after a decade of debate, 70:20:10 has yet to reach its peak, despite a varied and evolving understanding of the framework and its application within the L&D industry.

For their latest research report "The Evolution of 70:20:10 – Will L&D Survive or Thrive?", GoodPractice interviewed L&D professionals working in the UK, across Europe, Australia, and the USA to understand how diverse sectors of industry are using 70:20:10 practically.
Owen Ferguson, Managing Director of GoodPractice said, "Using in-depth qualitative research, we set out to investigate fundamental questions concerning 70:20:10’s practical uptake and whether it is even a net positive influence on our profession. The results truly surprised us.
"The research has shown that uptake of 70:20:10 is not only far more broad than anticipated but its practical application more sophisticated – acting as a change agent across geographies and sectors. The question that remains for us now is whether the core concepts behind 70:20:10 have trickled through to the consciousness of employees outside of L&D?"
Practitioners involved in the study were found to have very pragmatic and nuanced views about 70:20:10. Interviewed organisations were sophisticated in their understanding of 70:20:10 and did not apply it in a dogmatic or prescriptive way.
Sabine Gori, Credit Suisse, commented, "It’s the learning professional who really needs to understand 70:20:10, not the learner. Learners are already living this concept naturally. There is no need to introduce it to them. However, learning professionals need to understand what it means and how to offer learning opportunities across the learners’ workflow."

Brian Murphy, Citi, observed, "Some people can be quite dismissive of 70:20:10. My view is that they perhaps don't understand it as well as they could. When some people think about 70:20:10, they are not going deep enough. When I hear people critiquing the model, I'm always interested in ascertaining how deeply they understand it."

Rich Dawson, Virgin Trains, added, "I would say that you don't actually implement 70:20:10. 70:20:10 is there, in nature, and it is our job to harness that natural desire people have to learn, rather than trying to box people into specific slots."
GoodPractice will be in the exhibition hall at Learning Technologies, stand L30. Owen Ferguson (MD) is presenting on this report at 12.30 – 13.00 (Theatre 8) on 13 February.
