New Policy on ICT Use in Education
Bucharest (RO), February 2008 - (by Elena Lita) The Romanian Ministry of Education, Research and Youth and the Romanian Ministry of Communications and Information Technology have recently launched a new public policy proposal called "The integration of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) into the pre-college education system in Romania". The aim of this policy is to increase the quality and the access to the educational process through the integration of the ICTs, and for the first time in such a high-level directive, open educational resources, collaborative technologies, open source software, and online courses are taken into account. » MORE

Kenya Launches eLearning in Schools
Nairobi (KE), January 2008 - Kenya has become the third African country to launch eLearning facilities in secondary schools. The programme by Intel, and whose only other beneficiaries are South Africa and Nigeria, was launched at Kamiti Secondary School in the outskirts of Nairobi. The programme enables students to be taught through information communication technology (ICT) and is a collaboration effort between the Ministry of Education and several local and multinational ICT companies. » MORE

Romanian Schools Join Think.com Community
Bucharest (RO), December 2007 - (by Elena Lita) Oracle has implemented Rumania's first nation-wide educational programme dedicated to students aged between nine and eighteen years. Think.com is a free web-based environment for primary and secondary students and teachers and is designed to assist schools with the implementation and use of state-of-the-art technology for educational purposes. At the end of November, 1,600 teachers across the country, including all areas of specialization, attended training courses on using the Think.com programme. » MORE
Iona Technologies Connects Belgian Schools
Dublin (IE), December 2007 - More than 3,000 schools throughout Belgium will be using Irish software firm Iona's open source technology to deploy a centralised student-registration system after being chosen by the Belgian Ministry for Education. Iona will be providing distributed service-oriented architecture (SOA) infrastructure in the form of its FUSE ESB (Enterprise Service Bus), which will be integrated with various applications and databases to provide real-time registration for over one million students. » MORE
